MIPA and CMR classification: what you need to know.

2025-07-01

MIPA (1-amino-2-propanol) is now officially classified as a CMR substance (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, or Reprotoxic) under the EU CLP Regulation. More specifically, products containing more than 3% MIPA must include the H361f hazard statement: “Suspected of damaging fertility.”

These products are also required to carry the appropriate CMR hazard symbol (exploding lung icon), and safety data sheets must reflect this classification.

Why it matters in metalworking applications

MIPA is commonly used in metalworking fluids such as cutting oils, coolants, and lubricants — valued for its role in corrosion protection and microbial control. However, its reclassification carries major implications for both product labeling and workplace safety.

Once the MIPA concentration exceeds 3%, manufacturers and distributors are legally required to:

  • Provide updated SDS listing MIPA under CAS No. 78-96-6
  • Add the H361f warning and CMR pictogram to product labels
  • Support end users in complying with handling and exposure regulations

Non-compliant products are still circulating

Despite the regulatory update, many metalworking fluids on the market still lack proper labeling or up-to-date SDS documentation. This is more than a regulatory oversight — it’s a risk to safety, compliance, and legal standing for companies and their employees.

Are you sure about what you’re using?

Take a moment to review your current products:

  • Does the label show the H361f warning if MIPA >3%?
  • Is the CMR symbol present?
  • Is the SDS updated and listing the correct CAS number (78-96-6)?

If the answer is no — the product isn’t compliant. Reach out to your local representative to ensure you’re working with safe, legal, and future-proof solutions.
