Lubrication of conveyor bearings in an industrial dairy plant.

Lubrication of conveyor bearings in an industrial dairy plant.

Context

In an industrial dairy plant engaged in the production of milk, powdered milk, yogurts, cheeses, and other dairy products, the lubrication of conveyor bearings is crucial both in the wet and dry sections.

The application involves ground conveyors spanning a length of 700 meters in the wet section and overhead conveyors covering a distance of 1 kilometer in the dry section. With approximately 200 bearings in total, manual lubrication using EP 2 grease is employed. Lubrication intervals are set at 30 days for the dry section and 15 days for the wet section to ensure optimal operation of the conveyors throughout the dairy production process.

problem

One significant issue arises from the extensive manual lubrication process, demanding frequent attention due to the nature of dairy production. Continuous manual greasing strains resources and manpower, impacting operational efficiency. Additionally, in the wet section, about 25% of bearings have needed premature replacement, signaling potential lubrication practice or product suitability issues. Addressing lubrication strategies is crucial to extend bearing lifespan and cut maintenance costs. Accessing specific points on overhead conveyors in the dry section poses challenges, complicating the lubrication process and risking inadequate lubrication in critical areas. This access difficulty can jeopardize conveyor system performance and reliability, potentially causing production disruptions.

solution

We recommend using Castrol OLIT CLS grease for lubricating conveyor bearings in both wet and dry sections of the dairy plant. Castrol OLIT CLS is a highly water-resistant grease that provides excellent wear protection and can be applied for long periods with extended relubrication intervals. Its resistance to water, caustic soda, and detergents ensures reliable operation, even in harsh conditions. Compatible with centralized lubricating systems, it maintains stability under high pressures. With lubrication intervals of 5 months in the dry section and 3 months in the wet section, our solution aims to improve efficiency and extend bearing life.

results

The lubrication frequencies have been extended from 5 to 6 intervals, resulting in fewer maintenance interventions. Similarly, the number of bearing replacements has been reduced by a factor of 3. As a result, the client benefits from an annual saving of over €5,000.
